colour to make a statement.

Perception of colour in branding

Colour in design.

Branding guides.

Colour in design.

Colour can make or break a design.

You have your design for a new logo and now the natural progression is to add colour. Where do you start? So many different shades, tones and that is just the start.

Colour relationships

When you think about even the primary colours you instantly associate them with different things, take blue for instance. You naturally associate blue with water. Yellow with the sun or new things. Red, danger.

Breaking it down

I have a philosophy to group businesses into seasons. If you think about Spring and its characteristics; new, young, expressive, clear, approachable. A typical Spring business would be creative, children’s industry, marketing. Then let’s look at the Spring colours; greens, yellows, oranges, anything light and bright.

Summer all the warmth and sun may have taken the brightness away from the Spring colours so we can think more muted tones. Elegant and graceful. Florals come into play, good to remember if you are also thinking patterns. Also, we must remember the nautical theme in the Summer, navy, and reds. Typical Summer businesses would be in the wedding industry, photographers, jewellery designers or interior designers.

logo, branding, graphic design, business identity

Autumn, must be my favourite season. The beautiful colours of the leaves, the earthy tones. The businesses that would use these colors would be reliable and historic. Also remembering the organic and fair trade businesses or charities.

Winter, well winter is very black and white. Great for solicitors, banking businesses high end fashion and jewellery.
