Grit School – Tish Hawken
‘Grit School’ – why I wrote it and how it can help you
Let’s get this straight, I am not an accomplished or renowned writer (yet), nor do I have a Ph.D. in anything! However, what I do have is lots of personal experience of adversity, hard times, tough times – call them what you will.
I’m Tish Hawken, a Resilience and Life Coach to Female Entrepreneurs and I help women in business to develop grit and resilience when they are facing personal challenges. My coaching enables these amazing women facing hard times to continue running their businesses successfully as well as recovering from their difficulties.
Like many, I have had my struggles and plenty of them; to this day they continue in one form or another. That is simply life, it’s not meant to be easy in my mind. The difference between then (in my teens and twenties) and now (in my 40’s) is that I have learned a thing or two about struggle and recovery. I have experienced and been taught through circumstances what it takes to suffer, endure and overcome; coming out the other side reasonably sane without a bottle by my bedside or addicted to various drugs.
Having a background as a Psychological Practitioner, working for organisations such as Action for Children and the NHS, my professional skills mean I have a working knowledge as well as personal of how to change thinking and perspectives as well as what action is needed to bring about change.
I left my therapeutic career in January 2016 when my workload of patients who were struggling with anxiety and depression in the NHS reached 35 per week. Concurrently, my partner relocated to Abu Dhabi for work which left me alone in Wiltshire with my two daughters. Not having a great network of friends or family around me at that time, I decided to join a network marketing company. I wanted to embark on a project that was completely different from therapy-related work and I also knew that entering into the world of female entrepreneurship would expand my social and professional network.
“Writing this book has been not only a journey of extracting my knowledge, skills, and experience from my brain onto paper; it has also been incredibly therapeutic for me to revisit my past hurts again and to pull out what mistakes and successes I made. “
–Tish Hawken, Author of Grit School
I enjoyed learning how to build a business from scratch with the help and motivation of my peers and upline and the excitement and motivation that network marketing gave. However, what I noticed in the 12 months to follow was that many female entrepreneurs would struggle intensely, keeping up momentum in their businesses when they faced personal challenges. Often they would slow down or in some cases even give up their businesses due to lack of resilience, drive, and loss of vision.
This, I thought, was a real shame as I could see that potential was being wasted due to lack of grit, emotional resilience, negative thinking, poor planning/organisation and inability to manage stress. I knew that I could put something valuable together that women could turn to for advice and inspiration. Consequently, I decided to create my book ‘Grit School’ along with a new coaching business under the name of Tish Hawken.
Writing this book has been not only a journey of extracting my knowledge, skills, and experience from my brain onto paper; it has also been incredibly therapeutic for me to revisit my past hurts again and to pull out what mistakes and successes I made. The process of writing reminded me of the ways in which I dealt with such pain and struggle and how I tapped into my own resources and developed resilience to overcome.
‘Grit School’ contains 10 chapters (or lessons as I have named them) which will take you on a journey from accepting your current and difficult situation and remembering what your goals are, through to managing strong emotions, changing the way you think to get better outcomes, raising your vibration, loving and believing in yourself, planning and organisation, managing stress and tapping into your own strengths and resources to become the strong lioness that you need to be to accept, overcome and progress.
Alternatively, you can use this book as a ‘go to’ or a ‘dip in’ resource if you are looking to be inspired on a specific topic that resonates with what you need at that particular time.
I have enjoyed writing this book immensely, it has been a real pleasure along with shedding some tears and also remembering some good times. I sincerely hope it helps you on your journey in business and enables you to overcome whatever it is you are facing.
I would like to thank Tish for being a guest on my blog and giving me an insight in to Grit School (which is available now on kindle at a very special price!) I am trotting of to purchase a bit of Grit School to read on my holiday next week!
